Is this redemption a fair deal?

Compare the points price with the cash price, against what that program typically gets.

A Marriott room costs cash, or points alone.

Use the cash price with taxes, from the checkout page.

Published valuations of Marriott points run from 0.70¢ to 0.75¢; typical is their median. Valuations are estimates, not advice.

How the verdict works

We compare your value per point with the typical value of your program's points: the median of five published valuations (see below). Typical is the black caret above the bar.

BandStarts atWhat it tells you
Unusually high1.75x typicalOften a sign of an inflated cash price on a premium cabin or suite, not a bargain.
Strong value1.25x typicalBetter than most redemptions.
Fair value0.85x typicalIn line with ordinary redemptions for this program.
Low valueUnder 0.85x typicalYou'd get noticeably less than usual. Cash may be better.

Would you pay that cash price? A $4,000 business fare at 80,000 miles looks like 5¢ per mile, but if you'd only ever buy economy, the economy fare is the honest comparison.

Where typical comes from

Rather than trust one publisher, we take each program's latest value from five sites that publish what points are worth, and use the middle one. A median ignores a single high or low estimate, so no one site sets the verdict. The range shows how far the experts disagree.

ProgramTypicalPublished range
Marriott Bonvoy0.70¢0.70¢ to 0.75¢
Hilton Honors0.40¢0.35¢ to 0.50¢
World of Hyatt1.50¢1.40¢ to 1.80¢
IHG One Rewards0.59¢0.50¢ to 0.60¢
American AAdvantage1.45¢1.40¢ to 1.70¢
Delta SkyMiles1.20¢1.10¢ to 1.20¢
United MileagePlus1.20¢1.20¢ to 1.30¢
Alaska/Hawaiian Atmos Rewards1.50¢1.40¢ to 1.60¢
JetBlue TrueBlue1.30¢1.30¢ to 1.40¢
Southwest Rapid Rewards1.30¢1.20¢ to 1.40¢

Keep in mind. The sites measure differently: some take medians of real cash and award prices, others set values by judgement, and several draw on the same search data, so their agreement overstates how independent they are. Some value airline miles from economy fares only, which runs low for programs mostly used for business class. Every figure is an estimate, not advice.
